A closed sky with even light today, with flat calm through the day and the barometer on the way down. Whatever swims in North Star Lake should be near points where shallow meets deep. Block out the hours from night into morning. Cover water early, then settle where the signs are. Cold hands, careful casts: precision is everything today.

Look for North Star Lake in Duchesne County, Utah. Height above sea level is 11,411 feet. At roughly 14 acres, the whole thing is within casting reach of a single walk. It is high ground by Utah standards. Mountain View at 36 miles is the nearest place to stop. Roosevelt is 40 miles and Lyman 41 miles. It sits well inside its county, with no border complications.
Depth here is unknown, so count the lead down before committing. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. Still water like this holds fish on the edges rather than out in the open. Records held for Duchesne County cover brook trout, brown trout and rainbow trout. The county list is broader than any single water. At North Star Lake the water rewards a slow, careful approach.
The warmest month averages 51°F, the coldest about 15°F. Cold locks it up for a good stretch each year. The lid arrives early and lasts until roughly mid June. Average temperatures cross freezing around mid June in spring and again near early November in autumn. Look to early summer and the first cool weeks of autumn. On North Star Lake the same rules apply, with local timing.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. Mapping shows an empty shoreline: no ramp, no jetty, no marked entry. For the trout, small spinners and a box of nymphs cover both approaches. Check locally before you travel, because a wasted drive is a long one. Signs go up and come down, so check on the day. Failing this one, try Little Superior Lake, 1.9 miles away. Check the position on North Star Lake before loading the car.
