A grey, even sky over the water, with a mirror surface most of the day with a softening glass. The productive water at Mud Lake will be around the shallows early and the drop later. The productive run goes night into morning. Start on the obvious water and expand from there. Falling temperatures are switching fish back on.

Mud Lake sits within Duchesne County in Utah. The ground around here is mixed forest. Small at around 3 acres: two anglers spread out cover most of it. It is one of the smaller waters we list in Duchesne County. The closest town, Duchesne, is 33 miles away. Beyond it, Francis at 36 miles and Kamas at 37 miles. Rules here are straightforward: one county, one set of rules.
Open data we checked carries no depth for this water. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. Duchesne County records list brook trout, brown trout, rainbow trout, Arctic grayling and black-spotted cutthroat trout among the fish reported. The list covers the county rather than this water alone, so treat it as a guide. On Mud Lake the first feature you find is usually worth a session.
Averages here run 54°F at the top of summer and 18°F at the bottom of winter. The middle months are generous; the ends are demanding. Firm cover through the cold months, then open water from early June. The open-water window runs from around early June to about mid November in an average year. Just after the ice goes and just before it returns, the fishing lifts. It sets the rhythm of the year at Mud Lake.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. Nothing is mapped in the way of a ramp or car park within a short radius. Light line and small metal for the trout; a fly rod earns its place on calm evenings. Where the road in crosses private land, ask first. Barbless rules turn up on managed water more often than not. Aspen Lake sits 0.5 miles off and takes the overflow. Confirm access to Mud Lake locally before you travel.
