Clear overhead with good moonlight, with light air out of the NNW and the barometer heading up. Start the search at Craig Lake along windblown banks where food collects. Plan around the stretch from afternoon into evening. Keep moving until you find them. A cold snap day, so work the warmest water you can find.

Craig Lake is one of the Duchesne County waters in Utah. The surface lies 10,869 feet up. Surface area runs to about 10 acres — small enough to read in one session. It is high ground by Utah standards. Start from Roosevelt, 35 miles down the road. Mountain View is 36 miles away, with Ballard at 36 miles. It sits well inside the county, so one set of rules covers it.
Nothing we hold settles how deep this runs. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. Bays and points beat straight shoreline every time on water like this. County-wide records name brook trout, brown trout, rainbow trout and Arctic grayling. Take it as the county picture rather than a promise for this water. Craig Lake gives up its fish to patience rather than distance.
The seasonal spread runs 17°F to 52°F. Cold winters and warm summers give a wide working range. Expect a solid lid for months and a thaw around early June. On the long-run averages the water opens up around early June and starts locking again about early November. The strongest runs come at either end of the open season. On Craig Lake the same rules apply, with local timing.
The access position is unclear from public sources. Mapping records no facilities at all near this water. For the trout, small spinners and a box of nymphs cover both approaches. State or provincial rules still apply whatever the bank status. Where tickets apply, they are sold in the nearest town rather than on the bank. Painter Lakes at 1 mile is the sensible second choice. What applies at Craig Lake may have changed since it was mapped.
