Sunshine start to finish today, with just enough NE wind to ripple the surface with the glass slipping lower. The water to cover at Dead Lake is the first drop-off and weed lines. The best of it runs morning through afternoon. Push the good hours hard and rest through the dead ones. Autumn rewards covering water while the fish roam.

Look for Dead Lake in the Newton County part of Texas. Tidal water begins 35 miles from here. This is a pocket water of some 7 acres, and every part of it is reachable from the bank. By elevation it sits in the lower part of our Texas listings. Deweyville sits 13 miles from the bank. Then Buna, 15 miles, and Kirbyville, 16 miles. The boundary is near enough that local access rules are worth double-checking.
Depth is not on record here, so the bank has to tell you. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. Nearby survey and observation records mention spotted bass, bluegill, Rio Grande longear sunfish and threadfin shad. Reporting is uneven, so absence from the list means little. Fish Dead Lake where the bottom changes rather than where it looks deep.
Long-run averages give July about 82°F and January about 50°F. The season is continuous, with heat as the only real check. Shade and hour of day matter more than month. June to September is hot work, so the first and last hours are what count. That shapes the year on Dead Lake. Settled weather over several days beats a single fine one.
Who may fish here is not settled in anything we hold. Formal access is not mapped, so the last stretch is likely on foot. A small crankbait along the drop and a worm in the thick stuff cover the bass. Sort the permit out before you load the car. Where parking is tight, arriving early solves most problems. Failing this one, try Little River Lake, 0.6 miles away. Check the current arrangement for Dead Lake.
