An even grey lid over the water, with light air out of the ENE with the glass holding level. Most of the action on Cooper Lake should come off the weed line and any gaps in it. A long productive spell runs the day. Make the first hour count and build on it. Autumn rewards covering water while the fish roam.

The Caldwell County end of Texas holds Cooper Lake. The water sits 564 feet up. The water covers some 37 acres, so pick a bank rather than trying to cover it all. Martindale sits 3.2 miles from the bank. For a city, Austin is 28 miles off. A county line runs close by, so local bylaws can differ within a short drive. The far side sees far fewer people than the near one.
Depth went unrecorded, which puts the reading back on you. The arms fish better than the open middle whenever the water is up. Draw-down through summer strips the margins, so follow the water out. Records collected within a few miles name fountain darter, Guadalupe darter, channel catfish, redbreast sunfish and redspotted sunfish. Some of the species recorded here are protected or tightly regulated, so check what may be targeted before you fish. Work Cooper Lake in sections rather than trying to cover it.
Between January at about 49°F and August at about 84°F, the water has a wide range to work through. There is no dead season here at all. The first and last hours carry the summer; the middle is slow. April and May are the settled weeks, with October close behind. On Cooper Lake that shapes the whole year.
Ownership and access are not documented in what we hold. There is no mapped parking or launch close by, which usually means walking in. For the catfish, fish bottom baits into the deeper holes and let them sit. Check whether a boat is allowed before you tow one. Some ground is open by custom rather than by right, so tread carefully. Soil Conservation Service Site 15 Reservoir, 6.2 miles away, makes the obvious fallback. Check the position on Cooper Lake before loading the car.
