Solid cloud cover today, with a light NNE breeze with the barometer flat. The fish at Big Lake are likely to sit near the weed line and any gaps in it. The strongest window runs from morning through afternoon. Stay mobile and follow the activity. Autumn fish are feeding up and less fussy than in summer.

Big Lake lies in Refugio County, in Texas. It stands 16 feet above sea level. With some 156 acres of water, there is room for a boat but no need of one. A shoreline of some 2.5 miles keeps the choices simple. It is low-lying compared with other Texas water we list. The nearest town is Woodsboro, 8.5 miles away. Beyond it, Taft at 10 miles and Sinton at 10 miles. The boundary is close enough to be worth checking before you fish.
No depth figure has reached our records, which makes a plummet useful. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. Biodiversity records within roughly six miles include spotted gar, warmouth and flathead grey mullet. Presence in the area does not guarantee a fish in this exact water on the day. Big Lake gives up its fish to patience rather than distance.
Between January at about 55°F and August at about 84°F, the water has a wide range to work through. Heat, not cold, shapes the year here. Shade and hour of day matter more than month. Spring and autumn carry the year; summer squeezes it into the ends of the day. The season on Big Lake rarely departs from it.
Nothing in our records says who may fish here. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. Access is unmapped, which usually means a farm track and a walk. For the bass here, soft plastics worked slow along cover and a spinnerbait for searching do most of the work. Where a permit is needed, the nearest town usually sells it. Where tickets apply, they are sold in the nearest town rather than on the bank. The nearest alternative is McGuill Lake, 11 miles out. None of that is settled for Big Lake in what we hold.
