Fresh rain topping the water up today, with a kind SSE breeze on the water with the glass on the way up. Expect most activity at Aquilla Lake around the shallows early and the drop later. The forecast backs the stretch from the day. Ride the conditions while they last. Autumn rewards covering water while the fish roam.

Aquilla Lake is one of the Hill County listings for Texas. Height above sea level is 538 feet. This is big water, about 4.7 sq miles, and in a wind it behaves like a small sea. Around 22 miles of margin, so directions matter more than a general plan. It is the biggest water on our Hill County list. Whitney lies 7.7 miles from the water. Hillsboro lies 8 miles off, West another 9.8 miles. No county line comes close, which keeps the paperwork simple.
Sounding records show water to about 39 feet. The arms fish better than the open middle whenever the water is up. Rip-rap along the wall holds fish that the open bank never does. Open occurrence data for the surrounding area lists blue catfish, white bass and threadfin shad. Check the state or provincial list before planning around one species. Fish Aquilla Lake to its features, not to its size.
Climate normals give 84°F for July and 45°F for January. The awkward stretch is midsummer, not midwinter. The first and last hours carry the summer; the middle is slow. March through May is the strongest run, with October and November a second stretch. Plan around that when you fish Aquilla Lake.
Our records carry no access rule either way. Formal access is not mapped, so the last stretch is likely on foot. A small crankbait along the drop and a worm in the thick stuff cover the bass. Take the rules with you rather than trusting memory. Where the way in crosses private ground, ask first. Should this one be busy, Whitney Creek is 8.5 miles off. Signs at Aquilla Lake carry more weight than any list.
