A clean, cloudless night over the water, with mild air moving in from the WNW with the glass on the way up. The productive water at Lake Alvin will be around the weed line and any gaps in it. The productive run goes night into morning. Start on the obvious water and expand from there. Falling temperatures are switching fish back on.

Lake Alvin lies within the bounds of Lincoln County, South Dakota. The bank is 1,302 feet above sea level. It measures about 98 acres, which is a comfortable size for bank fishing. At about 3.5 miles of edge, most people work one arm at a time. Ground here is low by South Dakota standards. Nearest town is Harrisburg, 3.8 miles off. Then Sioux Falls, 8.9 miles, and Canton, 9.7 miles. A border sits close enough to be relevant to the paperwork.
Without a survey to go on, judge depth from how the bank falls away. Built water gives depth close in, which suits a bank angler. Inflow corners move water, and moving water gathers fish. County-wide records name bluegill, gizzard shad and channel catfish. Records at this level tell you what is in the area. On Lake Alvin the obvious spot is not always the productive one.
The warm month here averages 73°F; the cold one sits at 14°F. Winter closes the water for a while, and the reopening is worth catching. Break-up comes around early April, and the run that follows is short and strong. Break-up sits around early April on average, with the water closing again about early December. June through September is the settled part of the year, with the shoulders busier for fish. Keep it in mind when planning a trip to Lake Alvin.
Our records carry no access rule either way. There is a slipway on the shore, half a mile from the water we list. You can leave the car about half a mile from the water. There are picnic tables recorded roughly half a mile off. Mapping records toilets within half a mile. Some banks are open only from a marked point. Rules for boats are stricter than rules for the bank in many places. Lake Pahoja sits 8.6 miles off and takes the overflow. Treat Lake Alvin as unsettled until someone local tells you otherwise.
