High Lake is a Marshall County water, in South Dakota. Elevation runs to 1,962 feet. This is a pocket water of some 14 acres, and every part of it is reachable from the bank. On size it sits at the modest end of our Marshall County list. 15 miles away sits Britton, the nearest town. Further out sit Sisseton (21 miles) and Webster (34 miles). No boundary runs near, so the county rules hold throughout.
The records we hold are silent on depth, so plan to find it yourself. Bays and points beat straight shoreline every time on water like this. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. Records held for Marshall County cover bluegill, common carp and northern pike. The county list is broader than any single water. At High Lake the water rewards a slow, careful approach.
July runs about 71°F on average, January about 9°F. Spring and autumn carry the fishing; summer and winter test it. Winter locks it down, and mid April brings it back. Break-up near mid April, freeze-up near late November: that is the shape of an average year. June through September is the settled part of the year, with the shoulders busier for fish. High Lake runs to its own calendar within the local pattern.
Access is not recorded for this water. There is no mapped parking or launch close by, which usually means walking in. Bass water: a Texas-rigged worm near cover, a spinnerbait when you need to cover ground. Read any posted signs at the access point rather than assuming. Signs go up and come down, so check on the day. Should this one be busy, Horseshoe Lake is 1.1 miles off. For High Lake, the notice at the access point is the final word.
