A sharp, clear morning turning into a bright day, with dead-still conditions with pressure dropping. Expect most activity at Dry Lake around the shaded margin through bright spells. A long productive spell runs the day. Make the first hour count and build on it. Autumn fish are feeding up and less fussy than in summer.

Dry Lake is one of the Codington County listings for South Dakota. The country round it is lake country bush from end to end. Roughly 1,070 acres of surface: treat each bay as a water in its own right. With 9.2 miles or so of shoreline, boat anglers cover ground the bank cannot. The town to know is Watertown, 14 miles out. The nearest city of size is Sioux Falls, 107 miles away. This one is safely inside the county line.
Our records carry no depth, so judge it from the bank. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. Codington County records list Iowa darter, green sunfish, white sucker and northern pike among the fish reported. Those are county-wide records, so not every one of them will be in this water. Work Dry Lake in sections rather than trying to cover it.
Seasonal averages run from 10°F in January up to 71°F in July. Expect a real winter and a strong spring after it. The lid usually sets by midwinter and gives way around early April. On average, early April opens the water and late November closes it again. June through September is the settled part of the year, with the shoulders busier for fish. That is the shape of the year on Dry Lake.
The access position is unclear from public sources. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. Public mapping records no formal access here, so plan for a walk and soft ground. For the pike, wire up and throw larger lures along the weed edges. Take the rules with you rather than trusting memory. Signs go up and come down, so check on the day. Should this one be busy, Lake Nicholson is 3.1 miles off. Check the current arrangement for Dry Lake.
