Open sky and sharp air tonight, with just enough SSW wind to ripple the surface and a falling glass. Burgess Pond should fish best around edges and weed gaps today. The best of it runs morning through afternoon. Push the good hours hard and rest through the dead ones. Autumn fish are feeding up and less fussy than in summer.

Burgess Pond belongs to Sullivan County, Pennsylvania. What surrounds it is pine and birch. At about 30 acres, a day is enough to walk the shoreline properly. For supplies, Canton is 13 miles out. Further out sit Towanda (16 miles) and Troy (17 miles). Nearby, in order: Elk Lake within 2.4 miles, Maple Lake just 3.5 miles, Sunfish Pond within 6.4 miles, Swimming Dam just 6.5 miles and Mud Pond within 6.7 miles. The county line runs close by, so rules can change within a short drive.
Depth here is unknown, so count the lead down before committing. Standing timber shows when the level drops, and fish sit against it. Look for where the old bank line still shows under the surface. Survey and observation records for Sullivan County include brown trout, brook trout, yellow perch, pumpkinseed and bluegill. Those are county-wide records, so not every one of them will be in this water. On Burgess Pond the obvious spot is not always the productive one.
July runs about 68°F on average, January about 22°F. Winter shuts the surface down for months. The freeze runs deep into the year, with break-up near early April. Ice usually gives way near early April, and forms again about mid December. The weeks after the thaw and the ones before the freeze are the strongest. At Burgess Pond the season follows that pattern closely.
Ownership and access are not documented in what we hold. No built facilities appear in mapping around this water. A small crankbait along the drop and a worm in the thick stuff cover the bass. Gates get locked out of season on water like this. Where the way in crosses private ground, ask first. If the gate is shut, Elk Lake at 2.4 miles is the nearest alternative. Nothing here settles the position at Burgess Pond for certain.
