Not a cloud worth mentioning today, with the surface near flat with the glass slipping lower. Give the margins and the shelf beyond them the first hour at High Lake. A long productive spell runs the day. Make the first hour count and build on it. Cooler water spreads fish back across the shallows.

High Lake sits in Grant County, out in Oregon. The land about it is mixed forest. At roughly 6 acres, the whole thing is within casting reach of a single walk. It is high ground by Oregon standards. The closest town, John Day, is 16 miles away. The big place round here is Boise, 132 miles distant. No boundary runs near, so the county rules hold throughout.
Nothing we hold settles how deep this runs. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Reported across Grant County: rainbow trout, bridgelip sucker, largescale sucker and smallmouth bass. The county figures include rivers and lakes alike. High Lake gives up its fish to patience rather than distance.
Expect August near 54°F and December near 24°F on the long-run figures. The season turns properly here, and fish follow it closely. The freeze runs deep into the year, with break-up near mid May. On the long-run averages the water opens up around mid May and starts locking again about late November. Just after the ice goes and just before it returns, the fishing lifts. Anyone fishing High Lake regularly works to that calendar.
The access position is unclear from public sources. You will be walking about 0.9 miles from the nearest car park. Largemouth respond to soft plastics tight to cover; go weedless where the growth is heavy. Parking space is the usual limit rather than the bank itself. Barbless rules turn up on managed water more often than not. Little Strawberry Lake at 0.7 miles is the sensible second choice. What applies at High Lake may have changed since it was mapped.
