Scattered cloud dimming the moonlight, with stillness over the whole water and pressure going nowhere. The water to cover at Crater Lake is windblown banks where food collects. The day peaks in the night. Cover water early, then settle where the signs are. Shortening days concentrate the feeding into fewer hours.

Out in Douglas County, Oregon, sits Crater Lake. The water sits 6,175 feet up. This is big water, about 20.9 sq miles, and in a wind it behaves like a small sea. There is little indentation to the bank, so wind hits most of it the same way. Of the waters listed here in Douglas County, this is the largest. The closest town, Shady Cove, is 43 miles distant. Further out sit Eagle Point (48 miles) and White City (51 miles). No boundary runs near, so the county rules hold throughout.
Measured depth reaches about 1949 feet at the deepest point. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. Records held for Douglas County cover rainbow trout, cutthroat trout, tyee sucker and Coho salmon. Several of these carry legal protection or closed seasons; the rulebook comes before the rod. On Crater Lake the obvious spot is not always the productive one.
On the long-term average, August reads 56°F and December reads 27°F. Mild ends to the year keep the season long. Some winters give nothing at all, so plan for open water. June to September is hot work, so the first and last hours are what count. That shapes the year on Crater Lake.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. There is no mapped parking or launch nearby, which keeps numbers down. For the bass here, soft plastics worked slow along cover and a spinnerbait for searching do most of the work. Take the rules with you rather than trusting memory. Where parking is tight, arriving early solves most problems. Quillwort Pond at 6.8 miles is the sensible second choice. Check the position on Crater Lake before loading the car.
