Solid cloud cover today, with a whisper of wind from the E and the barometer on the way down. Most of the action on Hufty Lake should come off the shallows early and the drop later. Make the evening the heart of the trip. Make the first hour count and build on it. The cold will pin fish to deeper, stable water.

Hufty Lake lies within the bounds of Rolette County, North Dakota. It sits in lake country bush. Roughly 38 acres: a morning covers one end, an afternoon the other. Belcourt is the closest place, 7.6 miles off. Rolla is 9.4 miles and Shell Valley 11 miles. Neighbouring water: Mill Lake the better part of 1.5 miles, Oak Lakes (1.7 miles), Gordon Lake the better part of 1.8 miles, Long Lake (1.9 miles) and Byrnes Lake the better part of 2.2 miles. There is no boundary nearby to worry about.
Depth remains unrecorded, so treat the first session as a survey. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. Open biodiversity records for Rolette County list bluegill, northern pike, white bass and yellow perch. Species recorded across the county may be limited to a few waters. The near bank of Hufty Lake is often the one people ignore.
Long-term averages put July at about 65°F and January near 1°F. Four clear seasons, with a proper winter at one end. Winter locks it down, and late April brings it back. Going by climate averages, expect open water from about late April until roughly mid November. Just after the ice goes and just before it returns, the fishing lifts. The season on Hufty Lake follows the weather closely.
Nothing we hold confirms whether access is permitted. Nothing in the way of made access shows up nearby: no ramp, no car park, no path. A small crankbait along the drop and a worm in the thick stuff cover the bass. Season dates differ by species, so read the table. Where parking is tight, arriving early solves most problems. Mill Lake, 1.5 miles away, makes the obvious fallback. Rules at Hufty Lake are worth checking on the day.
