Cloud from horizon to horizon today, with a kind S breeze on the water and the barometer on the way down. Fish at Deep Lake should hold close to windblown banks where food collects. A grinding day likely, with the night worth the effort if any is. Save the long walk for a better forecast. Cooling water has fish active and on the move.

You will find Deep Lake in Bottineau County, North Dakota. It stands 2,185 feet above sea level. With some 75 acres of water, there is room for a boat but no need of one. The whole outline is near 1.3 miles, and most of it is walkable. Bottineau lies 9.9 miles from the water. For a city, Winnipeg is 156 miles off. It sits well inside its county, with no border complications.
Without a survey to go on, judge depth from how the bank falls away. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. Across Bottineau County, recorded fish include bluegill, brown bullhead and northern pike. Species recorded across the county may be limited to a few waters. At Deep Lake the first feature you find is worth twenty minutes.
Averages here run 65°F at the top of summer and 1°F at the bottom of winter. Fishing here follows the temperature more than the calendar. Ice fishing carries the winter, and the water opens about late April. On the long-run averages the water opens up around late April and starts locking again about mid November. Right after break-up, and again as the nights sharpen, is when to go. Plan around that when you fish Deep Lake.
The access position is unclear from public sources. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. No launch point is recorded nearby, so this is a bank water unless you carry a boat in. For the bass here, soft plastics worked slow along cover and a spinnerbait for searching do most of the work. Look for a notice board at the entrance. Signs go up and come down, so check on the day. Norberg Lake at 0.4 miles is the sensible second choice. What applies at Deep Lake may have changed since it was mapped.
