A closed sky with even light today, with just enough SSW wind to ripple the surface as pressure builds. Most of the action on Carpenter Lake should come off the weed line and any gaps in it. If you must go, go in the night. One good spot fished well beats five fished quickly. Cooling water has fish active and on the move.

Carpenter Lake is a Rolette County water, in North Dakota. The surroundings are lake country bush. At some 822 acres it is far too large to cover on foot in a day. Some 6.8 miles of bank gives room to move when the wind turns. Few waters listed in Rolette County are bigger. Start from Shell Valley, 12 miles down the road. After that come Belcourt at 13 miles and Rolla at 18 miles. It sits well inside the county, so one set of rules covers it.
Without a survey to go on, judge depth from how the bank falls away. This is a lake, so the margins and the first drop matter most. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. Fish documented in Rolette County include bluegill, northern pike, white bass and yellow perch. The county figures include rivers and lakes alike. The near bank of Carpenter Lake is often the one people ignore.
Average temperature peaks around 65°F in July and bottoms out near 0°F in January. A full turn of seasons, with the strongest sport on either side of summer. Ice fishing carries the winter, and the water opens about late April. On average, late April opens the water and mid November closes it again. Late spring and early autumn carry the year between them. Plan any trip to Carpenter Lake around it.
Our records carry no access rule either way. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. A slipway half a mile out gives trailer access. Largemouth respond to soft plastics tight to cover; go weedless where the growth is heavy. Local rules can differ across the county line, so check where you stand. Some ground is open by custom rather than by right, so tread carefully. The nearest alternative is School Section Lake, 1.4 miles out. Where Carpenter Lake is concerned, a local answer beats a written one.
