A closed sky with even light today, with a whisper of wind from the E with the glass holding level. On Cain Lake, work reed fringes and open pockets first. One clear peak today: the evening. Cover water early, then settle where the signs are. The cold will pin fish to deeper, stable water.

Look for Cain Lake in the Rolette County part of North Dakota. The surface lies 2,142 feet up. Roughly 78 acres: a morning covers one end, an afternoon the other. The nearest boundary is a fair way off.
Depth here is unknown, so count the lead down before committing. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. Bays and points beat straight shoreline every time on water like this. Fish documented in Rolette County include bluegill, northern pike and white bass. The county list is broader than any single water. At Cain Lake light and wind decide more than tackle does.
July runs about 65°F on average, January about 1°F. Seasons are distinct, and each one fishes differently. Ice-out usually falls in late April, and the weeks after it fish hardest. Averages place the thaw at late April and the freeze at mid November. The shoulder weeks of the open season are the productive ones. Anyone fishing Cain Lake regularly works to that calendar.
Our records carry no access rule either way. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. There is no recorded infrastructure here; expect to find your own way in. For the bass here, soft plastics worked slow along cover and a spinnerbait for searching do most of the work. Bank access can be seasonal on ground like this. Fishing rules and camping rules are set separately here. If the gate is shut, Bu Lake at 0.7 miles is the nearest alternative. Check the position on Cain Lake before loading the car.
