A bright day with hardly any cloud, with air barely moving as pressure builds. On Young Lake, work windblown banks where food collects first. Save your energy for the night. Work the productive water thoroughly. Autumn fish are feeding up and less fussy than in summer.

Young Lake is a Cumberland County water, North Carolina side. The ground around here is open plain. This is a pocket water of some 14 acres, and every part of it is reachable from the bank. Nearest town is Spring Lake, 0.8 miles off. Pope Air Force Base (historical) is 1.4 miles away, with Fort Bragg at 2.2 miles. This one sits near enough to a boundary to be worth checking.
Depth is unknown to us, and the shoreline is the better guide. The arms fish better than the open middle whenever the water is up. Standing timber shows when the level drops, and fish sit against it. Fish documented in Cumberland County include redbreast sunfish, dollar sunfish, yellow bullhead and bluegill. County records show the wider picture rather than this one place. On Young Lake that means starting tight and working out.
The range across the year is 41°F to 80°F. Cold never closes this one. Heat pushes fish deep from June onwards, so start early. February into May fishes hardest as the water warms. At Young Lake the season follows that pattern closely. Long daylight spreads the feeding across more hours.
Public data does not answer the access question here. A car park sits roughly half a mile away. For the bass here, soft plastics worked slow along cover and a spinnerbait for searching do most of the work. Read any posted signs at the access point rather than assuming. Check whether bait restrictions apply before you buy any. McFayden Pond sits 1.6 miles off and takes the overflow. For Young Lake in particular, ask before you travel.
