Bright, clear skies over the water today, with a whisper of wind from the WSW with the glass on the way up. Whatever swims in Upper Lake should be near structure within a cast of the bank. Expect the better fishing from night into morning. Give the likely spots time before moving. Autumn fish are feeding up and less fussy than in summer.

North Carolina holds Upper Lake, in Davidson County. It lies 873 feet above sea level. About 9 acres of surface, which puts the far bank inside easy sight. The town to know is Thomasville, 2.4 miles out. For a city, High Point is 5.6 miles off. In the same area: Middle Lake some 0.2 miles off, Lower Lake within 0.4 miles, Wheatmore Pond some 1.9 miles off, Burges Lake within 4.3 miles and Beard Lake some 6.5 miles off. The line between counties passes nearby, which can change who manages the water.
Depth is unmeasured here, so let the shoreline guide you. Held water runs deepest at the wall and shallows back to the inflow. A reservoir gives you a hard edge, a shelf, and not much else. Species logged across Davidson County include green sunfish, bluegill, redbreast sunfish, redear sunfish and yellow perch. The county list is broader than any single water. Treat Upper Lake as a water to read rather than to cover.
Average temperature peaks around 78°F in July and bottoms out near 38°F in January. Cold never closes this one. The cooler months are the comfortable ones to be out. February into May fishes hardest as the water warms. On Upper Lake the same rules apply, with local timing. Barometer swings matter more than a degree or two.
No access rule appears in what we hold. Parking is mapped about half a mile from the bank. Largemouth respond to soft plastics tight to cover; go weedless where the growth is heavy. Parking space is the usual limit rather than the bank itself. Keep proof of licence with you rather than in the car. Failing this one, try Middle Lake, 0.2 miles away. Check the position on Upper Lake before loading the car.
