A bright day with hardly any cloud, with a mirror surface most of the day with pressure climbing. Lake Waccamaw should fish best around the calm side of the wind today. The best of it runs night into morning. Push the good hours hard and rest through the dead ones. Fish follow the bait in autumn, so find one to find the other.

Columbus County in North Carolina is where Lake Waccamaw sits. Elevation runs to 39 feet. Surface area runs to some 13.8 sq miles, so a boat and a plan are both worth having. With 14 miles or so of shoreline, boat anglers cover ground the bank cannot. It is the biggest water on our Columbus County list. Lake Waccamaw lies 2.3 miles from the water. Further out sit Brunswick (11 miles) and Whiteville (12 miles). It lies deep inside the county rather than near an edge.
Without a survey to go on, judge depth from how the bank falls away. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. Bays and points beat straight shoreline every time on water like this. Records collected within a few miles name waccamaw darter, bluegill, swamp darter and yellow perch. Records come from public data, not from a stocking programme. Treat Lake Waccamaw as a water to read rather than to cover.
Temperature averages peak at 80°F in July and bottom out at 44°F in January. Winter is a mild inconvenience here, nothing more. Heat pushes fish deep from June onwards, so start early. April and May are the settled weeks, with October close behind. Lake Waccamaw runs to that rhythm year in and year out.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. A small crankbait along the drop and a worm in the thick stuff cover the bass. State or provincial rules still apply whatever the bank status. Where tickets apply, they are sold in the nearest town rather than on the bank. The nearest alternative is The Fishponds, 6.4 miles out. For Lake Waccamaw, the notice at the access point is the final word.
