A crisp, open sky after dark, with stillness over the whole water and the barometer heading up. The water to cover at Hogan Lake is the seam between weed and open water. The best of it runs night into morning. Push the good hours hard and rest through the dead ones. Falling temperatures are switching fish back on.

Night
Look for Hogan Lake in the Anson County part of North Carolina. The setting is dry hill. About 10 acres of surface, which puts the far bank inside easy sight. Wadesboro sits 7.3 miles from the bank. Cordova lies 9.1 miles off, Rockingham another 11 miles. A border sits close enough to be relevant to the paperwork. The near end sees the visitors; the far end rarely does.
There is no published depth for this one, so start shallow and work out. Points where the flooded channel swings in are the reliable ones. The old creek line under the surface is the feature worth finding. County-wide records name redbreast sunfish, bluegill, flat bullhead and piedmont darter. The list covers the county rather than this water alone, so treat it as a guide. Hogan Lake responds to conditions more than to tactics.
Seasonal averages run from 41°F in January up to 79°F in July. The surface stays open the year round. Spring and autumn carry the fishing; summer squeezes it into the edges of the day. June to September is hot work, so the first and last hours are what count. Plan around that when you fish Hogan Lake.
Whether you may fish here is not something records settle. Nothing built is recorded close to the bank here. For the catfish, fish bottom baits into the deeper holes and let them sit. Where the road in crosses private land, ask first. Some stretches are reserved and marked as such on the ground. Bonsal Company Lake sits 1.6 miles off and takes the overflow.
