Rain on and off through the day, with just enough NW wind to ripple the surface and pressure easing off. Give bays that hold the day's warmth the first hour at Snag Lake. Make the middle of the day the heart of the trip. Commit to the pattern once the first fish shows. The season of moving fish: stay mobile and watch for bait.

Snag Lake lies in Hamilton County, in New York. The surface lies 2,369 feet up. Small at around 17 acres: two anglers spread out cover most of it. By elevation it is in the upper part of our New York listings. Dolgeville sits 24 miles from the bank. It is 73 miles to Albany, the nearest city. The county edge is within a short distance of the bank.
Depth is unmeasured here, so let the shoreline guide you. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. Hamilton County records list lake trout, brook trout, yellow perch, smallmouth bass and brown bullhead among the fish reported. The list covers the county rather than this water alone, so treat it as a guide. At Snag Lake the first feature you find is worth twenty minutes.
Climate records put July near 63°F and January near 13°F. The middle months are generous; the ends are demanding. Once it clears, about late April, the fishing comes on quickly. The water is typically free of ice between late April and late November. May into June fishes hardest, and September gives a second good stretch before the lid returns. It holds true on Snag Lake more years than not.
Who may fish here is not settled in anything we hold. There is no mapped parking or launch close by, which usually means walking in. A small crankbait along the drop and a worm in the thick stuff cover the bass. Some banks are open only from a marked point. Fishing rules and camping rules are set separately here. Should this one be busy, Wilmurt Lake is 1.2 miles off. Nothing here settles the position at Snag Lake for certain.
