Round Pond in Orange County: How and When to Fish It

• Overview

Round Pond stands in Orange County, New York. The sea is 6 miles distant. At 14 acres it is the sort of place you fish for an evening rather than a day. Highland Falls lies 3 miles from the water. Further out sit West Point (3.7 miles) and Fort Montgomery (3.7 miles). You are close to a county edge here; who manages the access can change within a short drive.

• Where to Fish on Round Pond

Depth remains unrecorded, so treat the first session as a survey. Points where the flooded channel swings in are the reliable ones. Draw-down through summer strips the margins, so follow the water out. Fish documented in Orange County include common carp, brook trout, bluegill and pumpkinseed. The county list is broader than any single water. At Round Pond the water rewards a slow, careful approach.

• Seasonal Patterns

On the long-term average, July reads 71°F and January reads 25°F. Ice comes and goes from one year to the next. It should never be assumed safe, whatever the month says. Autumn steadies things again once the heat lets go. It holds true on Round Pond more years than not. Nights draw in quickly late in the season, so plan the walk back.

• Tackle & Baits

We hold no note on access for this one. A car park lies half a mile away, so the walk in is short. Bass water: a Texas-rigged worm near cover, a spinnerbait when you need to cover ground. Check locally before you travel, because a wasted drive is a long one. A polite question at the farm gate opens more banks than anything else. If the gate is shut, Long Pond at 0.6 miles is the nearest alternative. Signs at Round Pond carry more weight than any list.
