No direct sun expected today, with a light NNE breeze with pressure dropping. Expect most activity at Mud Pond around whatever cover the water offers. The best of it runs night into morning. Push the good hours hard and rest through the dead ones. Autumn fish are feeding up and less fussy than in summer.

Set in Essex County, New York, this is Mud Pond. It stands 1,109 feet above sea level. It covers about 11 acres, so this is small water you can walk round in under an hour. The closest town, Crown Point, is 6.3 miles distant. Ticonderoga is 8 miles and Port Henry 10 miles. Near neighbours: Penfield Pond just 0.9 miles, Knob Pond after 2.1 miles, Dudley Pond just 2.5 miles, Eagle Lake after 2.8 miles and Round Pond just 2.9 miles. No boundary runs near, so the county rules hold throughout.
Depth remains unrecorded, so treat the first session as a survey. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. Survey and observation records for Essex County include brown trout, brook trout, white sucker and pumpkinseed. Those are county-wide records, so not every one of them will be in this water. Mud Pond fishes better once you know its edges.
The year swings from about 17°F in January to roughly 67°F in July. Seasons are distinct, and each one fishes differently. Count on hard cover from midwinter, and open water from mid April. The season between ice runs from about mid April to early December. The weeks after the thaw and the ones before the freeze are the strongest. The season on Mud Pond rarely departs from it.
Our records carry no access rule either way. Public data shows nothing built here, so treat the whole approach as informal. For the bass here, soft plastics worked slow along cover and a spinnerbait for searching do most of the work. Where the road in crosses private land, ask first. Night access is frequently treated as a separate matter. If the gate is shut, Penfield Pond at 0.9 miles is the nearest alternative. For Mud Pond, the notice at the access point is the final word.
