An even grey lid over the water, with an easy breeze from the WSW with a softening glass. Expect most activity at Mud Lake around points where shallow meets deep. A broad window opens from the day. Commit to the pattern once the first fish shows. Shortening days concentrate the feeding into fewer hours.

Mud Lake lies in Herkimer County, New York. It stands 1,788 feet above sea level. Small at around 21 acres: two anglers spread out cover most of it. The closest town, Dolgeville, is 13 miles away. Little Falls follows at 17 miles, then Herkimer at 21 miles. Water in the same corner: Cranberry Lake within 0.9 miles, North Branch about 1.7 miles, Jerseyfield Lake within 2.1 miles, Cold Spring about 2.1 miles and Boyer Lake within 2.7 miles. It sits near the edge of the county, so check which rules apply.
Without a survey to go on, judge depth from how the bank falls away. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. Survey and observation records for Herkimer County include white sucker, yellow perch and brook trout. The county list is broader than any single water. On Mud Lake the obvious spot is not always the productive one.
Typical July readings run about 65°F; by January the average is down near 15°F. Winter closes the water for a while, and the reopening is worth catching. After mid April the shallows warm and the fish move up. Ice clears near mid April and comes back about early December in a typical year. September and October fish steadily right up to the freeze. Mud Lake runs to its own calendar within the local pattern.
We hold no note on access for this one. There is no recorded infrastructure here; expect to find your own way in. For the bass here, soft plastics worked slow along cover and a spinnerbait for searching do most of the work. Gates get locked out of season on water like this. Barbless rules turn up on managed water more often than not. Cranberry Lake, 0.9 miles away, makes the obvious fallback. Ask locally about Mud Lake if anything is unclear.
