A wet system passing over today, with a light chop building from the WNW and a falling glass. Start the search at Mud Lake along reed fringes and open pockets. Set the alarm around the night. Work the productive water thoroughly. Cooler water spreads fish back across the shallows.

Mud Lake is a Hamilton County water, New York side. The setting is lake country bush. About 24 acres of surface, which puts the far bank inside easy sight. The bank runs about 0.9 miles all the way round, so one visit can cover most of it. Start from Northville, 16 miles down the road. Albany is the closest city, 59 miles away. The nearest boundary is a fair way off.
Depth is not on record here, so the bank has to tell you. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. Public occurrence data for Hamilton County names lake trout, brook trout and yellow perch. Read it as a county summary, not a water-by-water list. The shape of Mud Lake decides where the fish sit.
July is the warm end of the year here, averaging about 65°F, while January sits near 15°F. Four clear seasons, with a proper winter at one end. Winter locks it down, and mid April brings it back. Averages suggest open water from about mid April through to roughly early December. The first weeks of open water and the last are the ones to plan for. The season on Mud Lake rarely departs from it.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. Formal access is not mapped, so the last stretch is likely on foot. For the bass here, soft plastics worked slow along cover and a spinnerbait for searching do most of the work. Sort the permit out before you load the car. Some stretches are reserved and marked as such on the ground. Canary Pond sits 2.5 miles off and takes the overflow. Check the position on Mud Lake before loading the car.
