Bands of rain crossing through the day, with a whisper of wind from the WNW and a falling glass. Start the search at Mud Lake along inflow corners and shaded margins. Plan around the stretch from afternoon into evening. Keep moving until you find them. Autumn rewards covering water while the fish roam.

Mud Lake is set in Fulton County, New York. The country round it is mixed forest from end to end. About 18 acres of surface, which puts the far bank inside easy sight. On size it sits at the modest end of our Fulton County list. Gloversville sits 12 miles from here and is the nearest stop. The nearest city of size is Albany, 53 miles away. The county line runs close by, so rules can change within a short drive.
The records we hold are silent on depth, so plan to find it yourself. Still water like this holds fish on the edges rather than out in the open. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. Species logged across Fulton County include brown trout, brook trout, white sucker and brown bullhead. Records at county level tell you what is around, not what is stocked here. At Mud Lake light and wind decide more than tackle does.
Climate normals give 65°F for July and 15°F for January. The freeze arrives properly here and holds. Hard water holds through the cold months, breaking up near mid April. Break-up near mid April, freeze-up near early December: that is the shape of an average year. Early summer and early autumn carry the open-water season. That is the shape of the year on Mud Lake.
Nothing we hold confirms whether access is permitted. There is a mapped slipway roughly half a mile away. A car park sits roughly half a mile away. Trout here take small spinners, spoons and, where fly water allows, a nymph or dry. Check whether a boat is allowed before you tow one. Rules for boats are stricter than rules for the bank in many places. If the gate is shut, Canada Lake at 0.6 miles is the nearest alternative. Check the position on Mud Lake before loading the car.
