An even grey lid over the water, with light air out of the W with the glass slipping lower. Whatever swims in Lake Colden should be near inflow corners and shaded margins. A broad window opens from night into morning. Commit to the pattern once the first fish shows. Cooler water spreads fish back across the shallows.

Lake Colden is listed under Essex County, New York. The land about it is lake country bush. At about 39 acres, a day is enough to walk the shoreline properly. The bank runs about 1.0 miles all the way round, so one visit can cover most of it. Compared with other New York water on our list, it sits high. The town to know is North Elba, 8.4 miles out. It is 97 miles to Ville-Marie, the nearest city. There is no boundary nearby to worry about.
We hold no survey for this water; read the slope of the shoreline instead. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. This is a lake, so the margins and the first drop matter most. Species logged across Essex County include brown trout, brook trout, white sucker and pumpkinseed. County data is a starting point rather than a guarantee. Read Lake Colden before you fish it and the day goes better.
Climate records put July near 60°F and January near 11°F. A solid cap is the normal state through winter. Once it clears, about early May, the fishing comes on quickly. The water is typically free of ice between early May and late November. June through September is the settled part of the year, with the shoulders busier for fish. Lake Colden runs to that rhythm year in and year out.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. Overnight stays are possible about half a mile out, where camping is mapped. There are toilets half a mile off. Rules differ from one water to the next round here. Barbless rules turn up on managed water more often than not. The nearest alternative is Avalanche Lake, 0.9 miles out. Treat Lake Colden as unsettled until someone local tells you otherwise.
