Damp, showery conditions today, with mild air moving in from the NNW with pressure dropping. Whatever swims in Hunter Pond should be near margins first, middle later. The productive run goes the day. Start on the obvious water and expand from there. The autumn feed-up is on; baitfish areas are the key.

Hunter Pond lies in Essex County, New York. Pine and birch runs right down to the water. Small even by pond standards, it rewards one careful line. Our Essex County list holds plenty of bigger water. 10 miles away sits North Elba, the nearest town. After that come Lake Placid at 12 miles and Saranac Lake at 14 miles. It lies deep inside the county rather than near an edge.
Without a survey to go on, judge depth from how the bank falls away. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. Public occurrence data for Essex County names brown trout, brook trout and white sucker. Records at this level tell you what is in the area. The shape of Hunter Pond decides where the fish sit.
Averages here run 62°F at the top of summer and 12°F at the bottom of winter. Four clear seasons, with a proper winter at one end. The lid usually sets by midwinter and gives way around late April. Break-up near late April, freeze-up near late November: that is the shape of an average year. The strongest runs come at either end of the open season. That shapes the year on Hunter Pond.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. Mapping shows an empty shoreline: no ramp, no jetty, no marked entry. Largemouth respond to soft plastics tight to cover; go weedless where the growth is heavy. Read any posted signs at the access point rather than assuming. Rules for boats are stricter than rules for the bank in many places. Upper Pond, 0.5 miles away, makes the obvious fallback. Rules at Hunter Pond are worth checking on the day.
