Cloud from horizon to horizon today, with a kind WNW breeze on the water and a falling glass. Expect most activity at Grant Lake around the seam between weed and open water. The productive run goes the day. Start on the obvious water and expand from there. Cooling water has fish active and on the move.

In New York, Grant Lake falls inside Hamilton County. It sits at 1,506 feet above sea level. About 9 acres of surface, which puts the far bank inside easy sight. Our Hamilton County list holds plenty of bigger water. The nearest place of any size is Northville, 7.7 miles away. Edinburg follows at 11 miles, then Gloversville at 16 miles. You are close to a county edge here; who manages the access can change within a short drive.
No depth figure appears in our records, so the bank has to tell you. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Reported across Hamilton County: lake trout, brook trout, yellow perch and smallmouth bass. The list covers the county rather than this water alone, so treat it as a guide. On Grant Lake the obvious spot is not always the productive one.
The year swings from about 16°F in January to roughly 66°F in July. Winter shuts the surface down for months. Count on hard cover from midwinter, and open water from mid April. On the long-run averages the water opens up around mid April and starts locking again about early December. Early summer and early autumn carry the open-water season. The season on Grant Lake rarely departs from it.
There is no clear statement anywhere on who can fish it. Mapping shows no built access close by; expect to walk in from wherever you can leave the car. For the bass here, soft plastics worked slow along cover and a spinnerbait for searching do most of the work. Where a permit is needed, the nearest town usually sells it. Night access is frequently treated as a separate matter. If the gate is shut, Woods Lake at 1.9 miles is the nearest alternative. Treat access at Grant Lake as something to verify.
