An even grey lid over the water, with a faint WSW drift with pressure dropping. Most of the action on Fern Lake should come off the weed line and any gaps in it. Expect the better fishing from the day. Give the likely spots time before moving. The season of moving fish: stay mobile and watch for bait.

Fern Lake is listed under Clinton County, New York. What surrounds it is lake country bush. This is sizeable water at about 426 acres, and a boat opens up most of it. The shoreline runs about 3.4 miles, so it pays to pick a stretch and stay with it. Size puts it in the front rank of our Clinton County list. The closest town, Peru, is 11 miles distant. Ville-Marie sits 70 miles out, and it is the nearest city worth the name. The boundary is close enough to be worth checking before you fish.
Depth is unmeasured here, so let the shoreline guide you. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. Open biodiversity records for Clinton County list brown trout, white sucker and brook trout. County records show what lives in the area; the local agency holds the water-by-water list. At Fern Lake light and wind decide more than tackle does.
July runs about 68°F on average, January about 17°F. The freeze arrives properly here and holds. The lid usually sets by midwinter and gives way around mid April. Climate figures give an open season running mid April to early December. The weeks after the thaw and the ones before the freeze are the strongest. At Fern Lake the season follows that pattern closely.
Our records carry no access rule either way. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. The map shows no ramp or car park nearby, so this is a walk-in water. Largemouth respond to soft plastics tight to cover; go weedless where the growth is heavy. Season dates differ by species, so read the table. Some stretches are reserved and marked as such on the ground. Should this one be busy, Slush Pond is 1.7 miles off. None of that is settled for Fern Lake in what we hold.
