Flat light and a covered sky today, with hardly a ripple anywhere and the barometer on the way down. Whatever swims in Cross Lake should be near the weed line and any gaps in it. The strongest window runs from the day. Stay mobile and follow the activity. The season of moving fish: stay mobile and watch for bait.

Cross Lake lies in Onondaga County, New York. Around the bank it is pine and birch. Surface area runs to roughly 3.1 sq miles, so plan for one area rather than the whole. At about 13 miles of edge, most people work one arm at a time. Few waters listed in Onondaga County are bigger. Jordan sits 4.1 miles from here and is the nearest stop. Peru lies 4.6 miles off, Elbridge another 6.4 miles. A county line runs close by, so local bylaws can differ within a short drive.
Depth is unknown to us, and the shoreline is the better guide. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. County-wide records name brown trout, common carp and white sucker. The county list is broader than any single water. On Cross Lake the obvious spot is not always the productive one.
Average temperature peaks around 71°F in July and bottoms out near 23°F in January. Seasons are distinct, and each one fishes differently. The lid usually sets by midwinter and gives way around early April. On the long-run averages the water opens up around early April and starts locking again about late December. Right after break-up, and again as the nights sharpen, is when to go. Time your trip to Cross Lake by conditions rather than dates.
No access rule appears in what we hold. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. Access is unmapped, which usually means a farm track and a walk. Largemouth respond to soft plastics tight to cover; go weedless where the growth is heavy. Where the road in crosses private land, ask first. Some water is controlled locally without a sign saying so. Failing this one, try Otter Lake, 2.9 miles away. Rules at Cross Lake are worth checking on the day.
