Artist Lake Fishing in Suffolk County, New York

• Overview

Artist Lake is set in Suffolk County, New York. The bank is 59 feet above sea level. It runs to roughly 27 acres — big enough to hold fish away from the bank, small enough to learn. It lies lower than most water we list in New York. The nearest town is Middle Island, 0.3 miles away. The big place round here is Bridgeport, 24 miles distant. The nearest edge is a long way off, so local rules apply throughout.

• Where to Fish on Artist Lake

There is no recorded depth, so work from what you can see. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Open biodiversity records for Suffolk County list alewife, blueback herring, pumpkinseed and bluegill. Some of the species recorded here are protected or tightly regulated, so check what may be targeted before you fish. On Artist Lake the obvious spot is not always the productive one.

• Seasonal Patterns

The year swings from about 31°F in January to roughly 73°F in July. Most months fish reasonably, given the right weather. Hard water here is never dependable, so check for yourself before stepping out. Autumn steadies things again once the heat lets go. The season on Artist Lake rarely departs from it.

• Tackle & Baits

Ownership and access are not documented in what we hold. Parking within half a mile means no long carry with tackle. Bass water: a Texas-rigged worm near cover, a spinnerbait when you need to cover ground. Ask in the nearest town if you are unsure. Night access is frequently treated as a separate matter. For a change of water, Spring Lake is 1.6 miles distant. Check the position at Artist Lake before loading the car.
