A clean, cloudless night over the water, with an easy breeze from the NE with a softening glass. The fish at East Lake are likely to sit near bays that hold the day's warmth. Make the night the heart of the trip. Make the first hour count and build on it. Falling temperatures are switching fish back on.

East Lake is a Lea County water, in New Mexico. This is dry hill country. Small at around 19 acres: two anglers spread out cover most of it. By elevation it sits in the lower part of our New Mexico listings. Head to Lovington, 31 miles away, for anything you forgot. It is 94 miles to Lubbock, the nearest city. It lies deep inside the county rather than near an edge.
Depth is unknown to us, and the shoreline is the better guide. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. East Lake responds to conditions more than to tactics. Wind decides which bank is worth your time on the day.
Long-term averages put July at about 77°F and January near 38°F. Cold never closes this one. March through May is the strongest run, with autumn a second stretch. Autumn steadies things again once the heat lets go. Plan any trip to East Lake around it. Weed growth peaks in late summer and changes where you can fish.
The rules here are undocumented as far as public sources go. This one is mapped as intermittent, so a wasted trip is a real risk in a dry year. Nothing built is recorded close to the bank here. Gates get locked out of season on water like this. Where parking is tight, arriving early solves most problems. North Lake, 1.2 miles away, makes the obvious fallback. Confirm access to East Lake locally before you travel.
