Open sky and sharp air tonight, with a persistent wind from the SSE and the barometer heading up. Activity on Wilson Lake should centre on the margins and the shelf beyond them. Block out the hours from morning through afternoon. Cover water early, then settle where the signs are. Cooling water has fish active and on the move.

Wilson Lake is one of the Garden County waters in Nebraska. This is rolling bush ground. The water covers some 60 acres, so pick a bank rather than trying to cover it all. Bank access stretches around 1.6 miles in total. Head to Alliance, 24 miles away, for anything you forgot. Beyond it, Bridgeport at 27 miles and Bayard at 37 miles. The nearest boundary is a fair way off.
The records we hold are silent on depth, so plan to find it yourself. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. County-wide records name common carp, white crappie, yellow perch, creek chub and fathead minnow. County records show what lives in the area; the local agency holds the water-by-water list. Wilson Lake gives up its fish to patience rather than distance.
Temperature averages peak at 74°F in July and bottom out at 24°F in January. A hard winter is normal, and the thaw brings a strong few weeks. The lid usually goes in mid March, which opens the strongest weeks of the year. Expect the water usable from around mid March until roughly mid December. May into June fishes hardest, and September gives a second good stretch before the lid returns. That shapes the year on Wilson Lake.
Our records carry no access rule either way. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. Access is unmapped, which usually means a farm track and a walk. For the carp, bait a margin spot and sit on it; corn and bread still work. Sort the permit out before you load the car. Check whether bait restrictions apply before you buy any. Should this one be busy, Alkali Lake is 0.9 miles off. Confirm before you fish Wilson Lake.
