Bright, clear skies over the water today, with a faint E drift and no real change in pressure. Most of the action on Wagners Lake should come off the shaded margin through bright spells. The day peaks in the evening. Push the good hours hard and rest through the dead ones. The pre-winter feed makes autumn days generous.

Nebraska holds Wagners Lake, in Platte County. The setting is pine and birch on every side. Around 72 acres of surface means several distinct areas to work. Start from Columbus, 1.1 miles down the road. Schuyler lies 17 miles off, David City another 18 miles. It sits well inside the county, so one set of rules covers it. Nothing about it is complicated once you have walked it.
Depth here is unknown, so count the lead down before committing. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. Across Platte County, recorded fish include common carp, bluegill, green sunfish and longnose gar. Species recorded across the county may be limited to a few waters. The near bank of Wagners Lake is often the one people ignore.
Expect July to average close to 76°F, with January the cold end at about 22°F. Fishing here follows the temperature more than the calendar. The freeze runs deep into the year, with break-up near mid March. Expect the water usable from around mid March until roughly mid December. The middle of summer slows a little, with dawn and dusk carrying it. Wagners Lake fishes to that pattern most years.
We have no record of the rules that apply on this bank. Recorded parking is half a mile off, far enough to travel light. For the bass here, soft plastics worked slow along cover and a spinnerbait for searching do most of the work. Bank access can be seasonal on ground like this. Some ground is open by custom rather than by right, so tread carefully. Should this one be busy, Lake Babcock is 4.7 miles off. Where Wagners Lake is concerned, a local answer beats a written one.
