Dull, settled light over the water, with a persistent wind from the S as pressure slides. Expect most activity at Townsend Lake around the calm side of the wind. The day fishes best from morning through afternoon. Fish confidently and change only when the bites stop. The autumn feed-up is on; baitfish areas are the key.

Townsend Lake is a Sheridan County water, in Nebraska. Beyond the shoreline you have pine and birch. At about 76 acres, a day is enough to walk the shoreline properly. The bank runs about 1.7 miles all the way round, so one visit can cover most of it. It is high ground by Nebraska standards. Alliance at 33 miles is the nearest place to stop. Bridgeport is 49 miles away, with Gordon at 57 miles. One jurisdiction covers this water end to end.
Depth is not on record here, so the bank has to tell you. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. Survey and observation records for Sheridan County include white sucker, brown trout, rock bass and yellow perch. It is the county picture; the agency list is water-specific. The shape of Townsend Lake decides where the fish sit.
Average temperature peaks around 72°F in July and bottoms out near 23°F in January. Winter shuts the surface down for months. Ice fishing carries the winter, and the water opens about late March. Averages place the thaw at late March and the freeze at early December. May into June fishes hardest, and September gives a second good stretch before the lid returns. At Townsend Lake the season follows that pattern closely.
Our records carry no access rule either way. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. The map shows no ramp or car park nearby, so this is a walk-in water. Bass water: a Texas-rigged worm near cover, a spinnerbait when you need to cover ground. Bank access can be seasonal on ground like this. Keep proof of licence with you rather than in the car. For a change of water, Wild Horse Lake is 1.8 miles distant. Check the current arrangement for Townsend Lake.
