Stars out and no cloud tonight, with a persistent wind from the S and pressure going nowhere. The water to cover at Round Lake is the calm side of the wind. A broad window opens from the day. Commit to the pattern once the first fish shows. Autumn fish are feeding up and less fussy than in summer.

The Sheridan County end of Nebraska holds Round Lake. The surface lies 3,852 feet up. The water covers some 113 acres, so pick a bank rather than trying to cover it all. The bank runs about 1.6 miles all the way round, so one visit can cover most of it. Size puts it in the front rank of our Sheridan County list. Head to Gordon, 26 miles away, for anything you forgot. Alliance follows at 42 miles, then Pine Ridge at 46 miles. The county line is nowhere near, so one local authority covers the water.
Depth figures are not published for this one. This is a lake, so the margins and the first drop matter most. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. County-wide records name white sucker, brown trout, rock bass, yellow perch and green sunfish. What holds for the county may not hold for this water. Round Lake repays a walk before the first cast.
The year swings from about 22°F in January to roughly 72°F in July. Winter puts a hard lid on this one. Look for the thaw near late March; the fishing lifts straight after. Ice clears near late March and comes back about early December in a typical year. The middle of summer slows a little, with dawn and dusk carrying it. Round Lake fishes to that pattern most years.
We have no record of the rules that apply on this bank. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. Nothing is listed nearby for parking or launching a boat. Bass water: a Texas-rigged worm near cover, a spinnerbait when you need to cover ground. Sort the permit out before you load the car. Some ground is open by custom rather than by right, so tread carefully. Dolly Warden Lake, 1.4 miles away, makes the obvious fallback. The position on Round Lake is worth confirming on the day.
