Stars out and no cloud tonight, with a consistent blow out of the S and pressure on the rise. The productive water at Mule Lake will be around the margins and the shelf beyond them. Block out the hours from afternoon into evening. Cover water early, then settle where the signs are. The autumn feed-up is on; baitfish areas are the key.

Nebraska holds Mule Lake, in Cherry County. Height above sea level is 2,969 feet. About 434 acres, so local knowledge or a boat saves a lot of walking. Some 4.8 miles of bank gives room to move when the wind turns. On our Cherry County list it sits near the top for size. The town to know is Valentine, 27 miles out. After that come Ainsworth at 42 miles and Rosebud at 52 miles. No boundary runs near, so the county rules hold throughout.
Depth is unmeasured here, so let the shoreline guide you. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Still water like this holds fish on the edges rather than out in the open. Fish documented in Cherry County include white sucker, common carp, green sunfish and rock bass. These are county-wide records, so not all of them will be in this water. Mule Lake responds to conditions more than to tactics.
In an average year July sits at 73°F and January at 22°F. Winter closes the water for a while, and the reopening is worth catching. Ice is part of the season here, ending near late March. The lid tends to go about late March and return around early December. Fish feed hardest at the start and the close of the open season. The season on Mule Lake follows the weather closely.
Our records carry no access rule either way. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. Nothing is listed nearby for parking or launching a boat. A small crankbait along the drop and a worm in the thick stuff cover the bass. Local rules can differ across the county line, so check where you stand. Where parking is tight, arriving early solves most problems. If the gate is shut, Dads Lake at 1.2 miles is the nearest alternative. Treat Mule Lake as unsettled until someone local tells you otherwise.
