A crisp, open sky after dark, with a stiffish breeze from the S with the glass slipping lower. Expect most activity at Home Lake around the weed line and any gaps in it. The day holds up well from night into morning. Work the productive water thoroughly. Shortening days concentrate the feeding into fewer hours.

The Sheridan County entry here is Home Lake, in Nebraska. This is rolling bush ground. It runs to roughly 50 acres — big enough to hold fish away from the bank, small enough to learn. Around 1.3 miles of margin, front to back. It is high ground by Nebraska standards. For supplies, Alliance is 15 miles out. Bridgeport follows at 31 miles, then Bayard at 37 miles. One jurisdiction covers this water end to end.
Depth is not on record here, so the bank has to tell you. This is a lake, so the margins and the first drop matter most. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Fish documented in Sheridan County include white sucker, brown trout, rock bass and yellow perch. Take it as the county picture rather than a promise for this water. Home Lake responds to conditions more than to tactics.
Between January at about 24°F and July at about 74°F, the water has a wide range to work through. Hard water is a season in its own right here. The freeze runs deep into the year, with break-up near mid March. Expect the water usable from around mid March until roughly early December. The shoulder weeks of the open season are the productive ones. Home Lake fishes to that pattern most years.
The rules here are undocumented as far as public sources go. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. Mapping records no facilities at all near this water. For the bass here, soft plastics worked slow along cover and a spinnerbait for searching do most of the work. A landowner's word beats anything printed elsewhere. Some ground is open by custom rather than by right, so tread carefully. Should this one be busy, Blue Stem Lake is 1.2 miles off. Nothing here settles the position at Home Lake for certain.
