Clear overhead with good moonlight, with a busy S wind on the open water as pressure builds. The fish at Cottonwood Lake are likely to sit near the margins and the shelf beyond them. The best of it runs night into morning. Push the good hours hard and rest through the dead ones. Autumn fish are feeding up and less fussy than in summer.

Look for Cottonwood Lake in the Cherry County part of Nebraska. Beyond the shoreline you have rolling bush. About 667 acres, so local knowledge or a boat saves a lot of walking. You are looking at roughly 5.0 miles of shoreline, with plenty of water between access points. Few waters listed in Cherry County are bigger. For supplies, Gordon is 38 miles out. After that come Martin at 53 miles and Pine Ridge at 61 miles. The county line is nowhere near, so one local authority covers the water.
Surveys put the deepest water at about 7.9 feet. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. Fish documented in Cherry County include white sucker, common carp, green sunfish and rock bass. Records at county level tell you what is around, not what is stocked here. Read Cottonwood Lake before you fish it and the day goes better.
Typical July readings run about 72°F; by January the average is down near 22°F. Hard water is a season in its own right here. Firm cover through the cold months, then open water from late March. Averages suggest open water from about late March through to roughly early December. Fish feed hardest at the start and the close of the open season. It sets the rhythm of the year at Cottonwood Lake.
The rules here are undocumented as far as public sources go. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. Public data shows nothing built here, so treat the whole approach as informal. Largemouth respond to soft plastics tight to cover; go weedless where the growth is heavy. A landowner's word beats anything printed elsewhere. Some stretches are reserved and marked as such on the ground. Failing this one, try Piester Lake, 1.1 miles away. For Cottonwood Lake in particular, ask before you travel.
