A grey, even sky over the water, with a helpful ripple pushed from the WSW and pressure on the rise. Start the search at Z Lake along shallow cover and weed edges. The strongest window runs from the day. Stay mobile and follow the activity. Cold air keeps the water sluggish; scale everything down.

The Park County entry here is Z Lake, in Montana. It sits in lake country bush country. At roughly 16 acres, the whole thing is within casting reach of a single walk. Compared with other Montana water on our list, it sits high. For a base, Red Lodge sits 26 miles out. Absarokee is 35 miles away, with Columbus at 46 miles. This one is safely inside the county line.
Depth is unknown to us, and the shoreline is the better guide. Bays and points beat straight shoreline every time on water like this. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. Park County records list rainbow trout, brook trout and california golden trout among the fish reported. Records at county level tell you what is around, not what is stocked here. The near bank of Z Lake is often the one people ignore.
Between January at about 14°F and August at about 49°F, the water has a wide range to work through. Hard water is a season in its own right here. Count on hard cover from midwinter, and open water from early June. Climate averages put the opening at about early June and the closing near early November. May into June fishes hardest, and September gives a second good stretch before the lid returns. Z Lake runs to that rhythm year in and year out.
We have no record of the rules that apply on this bank. Public mapping records no formal access here, so plan for a walk and soft ground. Light line and small metal for the trout; a fly rod earns its place on calm evenings. A landowner's word beats anything printed elsewhere. Access can change hands, so last year's answer may not hold. Rock Tree Lake, 0.2 miles away, makes the obvious fallback. Where Z Lake is concerned, a local answer beats a written one.
