An even grey lid over the water, with a light chop building from the SW with the glass on the way up. Start the search at Van Lake along the first drop-off and weed lines. Little to get excited about, though the night holds a sliver of promise. Lower the pace and stay patient. Cooler water spreads fish back across the shallows.

Look for Van Lake in the Lake County part of Montana. Height above sea level is 3,655 feet. Surface area is around 55 acres, which gives you real water without needing a boat. With about 1.2 miles of edge, you can try several depths in one session. Pablo at 18 miles is the nearest place to stop. After that come Polson at 18 miles and Ronan at 20 miles. The county line is nowhere near, so one local authority covers the water.
Depth here is unknown, so count the lead down before committing. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Reported across Lake County: rainbow trout, sockeye salmon and smallmouth bass. At least one recorded species is protected in parts of its range; read the local rules before targeting anything. Fish Van Lake to its features, not to its size.
August runs about 63°F on average, January about 22°F. A hard winter is normal, and the thaw brings a strong few weeks. Expect a solid lid for months and a thaw around early April. The open-water window runs from around early April to about late November in an average year. The weeks after the thaw and the ones before the freeze are the strongest. Plan any trip to Van Lake around it.
The rules here are undocumented as far as public sources go. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. You can launch from a ramp around half a mile away. You can camp about half a mile away, going by the mapping. A small crankbait along the drop and a worm in the thick stuff cover the bass. A phone call first saves an afternoon. Rules for boats are stricter than rules for the bank in many places. Failing this one, try Shay Lake, 3.2 miles away. Confirm before you fish Van Lake.
