A clear night sky over the water, with light air out of the SW and a rising glass. The productive water at ULT Reservoir will be around the mouths of the creek arms. Numbers are low everywhere; the morning is the pick of them. Go lighter and slower than usual. Autumn fish are feeding up and less fussy than in summer.

ULT Reservoir is a Valley County water, Montana side. The setting is pine and birch. Small at around 23 acres: two anglers spread out cover most of it. It lies lower than most water we list in Montana. Supplies mean a trip to Glasgow, 29 miles off. Billings sits 163 miles out, and it is the nearest city worth the name. It sits well inside its county, with no border complications.
No chart reached our records; the first cast is your sounding. Built water gives depth close in, which suits a bank angler. A reservoir gives you a hard edge, a shelf, and not much else. Records held for Valley County cover Chinook salmon, northern pike, cisco and walleye. Several of these carry legal protection or closed seasons; the rulebook comes before the rod. On ULT Reservoir that means starting tight and working out.
Between January at about 15°F and July at about 71°F, the water has a wide range to work through. The middle months are generous; the ends are demanding. Count on hard cover from midwinter, and open water from early April. From about early April to around late November, expect open water on the long-run figures. The strongest runs come at either end of the open season. Keep it in mind when planning a trip to ULT Reservoir.
Ownership and access are not documented in what we hold. Formal access is not mapped, so the last stretch is likely on foot. Largemouth respond to soft plastics tight to cover; go weedless where the growth is heavy. Check locally before you travel, because a wasted drive is a long one. Some ground is open by custom rather than by right, so tread carefully. Whitetail Reservoir at 1.9 miles is the sensible second choice. Rules at ULT Reservoir are worth checking on the day.
