Gusty conditions over the water today, with the WSW wind making open water hard work and pressure easing off. On Sand Lake, work windblown banks where food collects first. If you must go, go in the night. One good spot fished well beats five fished quickly. The season of moving fish: stay mobile and watch for bait.

You will find Sand Lake in Chouteau County, Montana. This is rolling bush country. It runs to roughly 54 acres — big enough to hold fish away from the bank, small enough to learn. The full circuit measures close to 1.1 miles on foot. It is a small entry by Chouteau County standards. The nearest place of any size is Fort Benton, 14 miles away. Malmstrom Air Force Base follows at 32 miles, then Great Falls at 38 miles. It lies deep inside the county rather than near an edge.
Open data we checked carries no depth for this water. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. Across Chouteau County, recorded fish include rainbow trout, northern pike, walleye, smallmouth bass and largemouth bass. County data is a starting point rather than a guarantee. Read Sand Lake for ten minutes before the first cast goes out.
The seasonal spread runs 22°F to 67°F. The season turns properly here, and fish follow it closely. Ice is part of the season here, ending near late March. Break-up near late March, freeze-up near early December: that is the shape of an average year. The middle of summer slows a little, with dawn and dusk carrying it. Keep it in mind when planning a trip to Sand Lake.
Nothing we hold confirms whether access is permitted. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. No built facilities appear in mapping around this water. For the bass here, soft plastics worked slow along cover and a spinnerbait for searching do most of the work. Where access is informal, keep it that way by behaving. Where the way in crosses private ground, ask first. If the gate is shut, Lost Lake at 1.4 miles is the nearest alternative. None of that is settled for Sand Lake in what we hold.
