No direct sun expected today, with a proper ripple driven from the WSW with the glass slipping lower. The fish at Polaris Lake are likely to sit near the margins and the shelf beyond them. The day peaks in the night. Work fewer spots, but work them properly. Shortening days concentrate the feeding into fewer hours.

Polaris Lake is a Beaverhead County water, in Montana. It sits in pine and birch country. This is a pocket water of some 14 acres, and every part of it is reachable from the bank. The town to know is Dillon, 23 miles out. Then Salmon, 44 miles, and Butte, 49 miles. Nearest other option: Dollar Lake about 1.8 miles, Scott Lake a shade over 1.9 miles, Twin Lakes about 2.1 miles, Tub Lake a shade over 2.6 miles and Boatman Lake about 2.8 miles. This one is safely inside the county line.
There is no recorded depth, so work from what you can see. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. Survey and observation records for Beaverhead County include rainbow trout, brook trout, brown trout, cutthroat trout and Arctic grayling. County records show the wider picture rather than this one place. Read Polaris Lake for ten minutes before the first cast goes out.
Climate records put July near 53°F and December near 18°F. Expect a real winter and a strong spring after it. Ice is part of the season here, ending near late May. Averages suggest open water from about late May through to roughly mid November. June through September is the settled part of the year, with the shoulders busier for fish. Polaris Lake runs to that rhythm year in and year out.
Our records carry no access rule either way. Access is unmapped, which usually means a farm track and a walk. For the trout, small spinners and a box of nymphs cover both approaches. Rules for this water may differ from the county norm. Close seasons apply to some species and not others. For a change of water, Dollar Lake is 1.8 miles distant.
