Gusty conditions over the water today, with enough WSW wind to limit the options with a firming glass. Activity on Morning Star Lake should centre on the seam between weed and open water. A slow day overall; the night is the best of a quiet lot. Scale down and fish slowly. Shortening days concentrate the feeding into fewer hours.

Morning Star Lake lies in Glacier County, in Montana. The country here is lake country bush. Small at around 10 acres: two anglers spread out cover most of it. It is a small entry by Glacier County standards. South Browning is the closest town at 20 miles. Further out sit Browning (20 miles) and North Browning (21 miles). The nearest boundary is well away, so one set of rules covers the water.
No figure exists for depth, so let the water show you. Still water like this holds fish on the edges rather than out in the open. Bays and points beat straight shoreline every time on water like this. Reported across Glacier County: brook trout, northern pike, longnose sucker, yellow perch and mountain whitefish. Read it as a county summary, not a water-by-water list. On Morning Star Lake that means starting tight and working out.
August runs about 54°F on average, January about 16°F. Cold winters and warm summers give a wide working range. Once it clears, about mid May, the fishing comes on quickly. Expect the water usable from around mid May until roughly early November. Just after the ice goes and just before it returns, the fishing lifts. Keep it in mind when planning a trip to Morning Star Lake.
Our records carry no access rule either way. A campsite is mapped about half a mile away, which makes an early start easier. Light line and small metal for the trout; a fly rod earns its place on calm evenings. Look for a notice board at the entrance. Barbless rules turn up on managed water more often than not. The nearest alternative is Katoya Lake, 1.1 miles out. Nothing on Morning Star Lake should be assumed from this page alone.
