Wet weather working through today, with a busy WSW wind on the open water and pressure going nowhere. Give the calm side of the wind the first hour at McDonald Lake. Expectations low today; if anything moves, it will be in the night. Lower the pace and stay patient. Autumn rewards covering water while the fish roam.

McDonald Lake sits within Lake County in Montana. It lies 3,563 feet above sea level. The water covers some 188 acres, so pick a bank rather than trying to cover it all. There is roughly 2.9 miles of shoreline here, which is a short walk end to end. Few waters listed in Lake County are bigger. Ronan is the closest town at 9.4 miles. Pablo is 14 miles away, with Polson at 21 miles. The county line is nowhere near, so one local authority covers the water.
No published figure covers depth, so learn it as you fish. Inflow corners move water, and moving water gathers fish. Rip-rap along the wall holds fish that the open bank never does. Survey and observation records for Lake County include rainbow trout, sockeye salmon, smallmouth bass, yellow perch and largemouth bass. At least one recorded species is protected in parts of its range; read the local rules before targeting anything. Treat McDonald Lake as a water to read rather than to cover.
Long-term averages put August at about 58°F and January near 20°F. Hard water is a season in its own right here. Count the season from break-up, usually late April. Averages suggest open water from about late April through to roughly mid November. The middle of summer slows a little, with dawn and dusk carrying it. Anyone fishing McDonald Lake regularly works to that calendar.
Nothing on record says whether the bank is open or closed. No made access appears within a short radius, so plan to park on a verge and walk. Largemouth respond to soft plastics tight to cover; go weedless where the growth is heavy. Look for a notice board at the entrance. Where the way in crosses private ground, ask first. For a change of water, Summit Lake is 2.8 miles distant. None of that is settled for McDonald Lake in what we hold.
