Scattered cloud dimming the moonlight, with a gentle ripple from the WSW with the glass on the way up. Activity on Loon Lake should centre on the shaded margin through bright spells. A grinding day likely, with the night worth the effort if any is. Save the long walk for a better forecast.

Look for Loon Lake in the Missoula County part of Montana. The surface lies 4,049 feet up. About 21 acres of surface, which puts the far bank inside easy sight. The nearest town is Ronan, 18 miles away. Pablo follows at 21 miles, then Seeley Lake at 22 miles. It sits well inside the county, so one set of rules covers it. Yearly rain runs near 25 inches, concentrated around January and thinnest in July.
Depth is unknown to us, and the shoreline is the better guide. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. Missoula County records list rainbow trout, brook trout, cutthroat trout, northern pike and sockeye salmon among the fish reported. Several of these carry legal protection or closed seasons; the rulebook comes before the rod. Loon Lake fishes better once you know its edges.
The warmest month averages 62°F, the coldest about 22°F. Seasons are distinct, and each one fishes differently. Winter fishing happens on the ice here, with open water back around early April. Break-up sits around early April on average, with the water closing again about late November. The middle of summer slows a little, with dawn and dusk carrying it. Loon Lake runs to that rhythm year in and year out.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. Mapping shows no built access close by; expect to walk in from wherever you can leave the car. Bass water: a Texas-rigged worm near cover, a spinnerbait when you need to cover ground. Local rules can differ across the county line, so check where you stand. Rules for boats are stricter than rules for the bank in many places. Stoner Lake at 1 mile is the sensible second choice. Ask locally about Loon Lake if anything is unclear.
