A blustery day over the water, with a useful WSW wind pushing food about and the barometer heading up. Most of the action on Glacier Lake should come off shallow cover and weed edges. A hard day on paper; the night edges the rest. Scale down and fish slowly. Cooler water spreads fish back across the shallows.

The Missoula County end of Montana holds Glacier Lake. The ground round it is mixed forest. This is a pocket water of some 18 acres, and every part of it is reachable from the bank. The nearest place of any size is Bonner-West Riverside, 12 miles away. East Missoula follows at 12 miles, then Missoula at 12 miles. It lies deep inside the county rather than near an edge.
No depth figure has reached our records, which makes a plummet useful. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. Public occurrence data for Missoula County names rainbow trout, brook trout, cutthroat trout and northern pike. Several of these carry legal protection or closed seasons; the rulebook comes before the rod. Glacier Lake gives up more to patience than to distance.
Long-run averages give August about 56°F and December about 19°F. Winter puts a hard lid on this one. Hard cover is dependable here; it goes around early May. Break-up near early May, freeze-up near mid November: that is the shape of an average year. Just after the ice goes and just before it returns, the fishing lifts. On Glacier Lake the same rules apply, with local timing.
Ownership and access are not documented in what we hold. No launch point is recorded nearby, so this is a bank water unless you carry a boat in. Largemouth respond to soft plastics tight to cover; go weedless where the growth is heavy. Look for a notice board at the entrance. A polite question at the farm gate opens more banks than anything else. Little Lake sits 0.6 miles off and takes the overflow. The position on Glacier Lake is worth confirming on the day.
